Teachers use a variety of approaches and strategies. Teaching may be cross curricular or subject based. The compulsory areas of learning and the cross curricular educational themes are set out below.

1. Language and Literacy (including Talking and Listening, Reading and Writing); in Carrickmannon children have Spanish lessons every week.

2. Mathematics and Numeracy (focusing on the development of mathematical concepts and numeracy across the curriculum)

3. The Arts (including Art and Design, Drama and Music). Children have the opportunity to have weekly individual woodwind tuition from Music Centre tutors.

4. The World Around Us (focusing on the development of knowledge, skills and understanding in Geography, History and Science and Technology)

5. Personal Development and Mutual Understanding (focusing on emotional development, social skills, learning how to learn, health, relationships and sexuality education and mutual understanding in the local and global community)

6. Physical Education (focusing on the development of knowledge, skills and understanding through play and a range of physical activities).

7. ICT All children take part in an ICT accreditation scheme each year and by the time children leave school in P7 they have all attained a high level of proficiency in the use of all areas of technology.

At the heart of the curriculum lies an explicit emphasis on the development of skills and capabilities for lifelong learning and for operating effectively in society.
